Easy Catalog
(c) 1991
version 1.0A
by Dean L. Wiley
1613 Chelsea Road #346
San Marino, CA 91108
Easy Catalog is just what the name says. As easy as you are
reading this documentation, you could be cataloging your
disk(ettes).
Commands for Easy Catalog
There are no command line options or "hidden" commands within
the program (yet). Everything is put on screen - prompting
you for actions instead of waiting for a function key or what
not.
Running Easy Catalog
If you are in the directory where the file EZDC10A.EXE exists,
or if it is in any directory indicated by your DOS PATH
statement, simply type EZDC10A to run the program. Then just
follow the prompts to get your disk(ette)s cataloged.
Please Note: Easy Catalog uses extensive temporary file
swapping to generate it's output. If you use a floppy drive
as the output drive it could take a long time to process each
disk. Ram Drives are always the fastest place, but a hard
drive is recommended.
(I recommend renaming EZDC10A.EXE to EZDC.EXE for ease of use.
If you don't understand renaming conventions, consult your DOS
manual or just type EZDC10A when you want to run the program.)
The file CATALOG.TXT that is the only output file of Easy
Catalog is a standard ASCII text file. There are no
formatting or special characters contained within the file.
After cataloging, rename the file or print it. I recommend
renaming in case you want to make changes (you'll have to use
some kind of editor for that, I didn't build changing into the
program). IF YOU DO NOT RENAME THE FILE IT WILL BE DELETED
THE NEXT TIME EASY CATALOG IS RUN!! This program
automatically uses the file name "catalog.txt" for output, and
does not care if that file already exists. You have been
forewarned.
Easy Catalog can be used to catalog hard drives as well as
floppies, this function being useful for virus protection
(identifying changed file sizes, dates, times), or just for
record keeping.
---The Output File (catalog.txt)---
Because this program was written to be a simple and fast way
to catalog disks, there is no edit or revise functions
available for your catalogs. The easiest way to update a
catalog if you have made changes to a disk in that catalog is
to run a DOS DIRectory of the disk, redirecting output (see
your DOS manual if you don't understand output redirection) to
a file. Then use your editor to "CUT" or "COPY" the file
listing from that file, load the catalog, and "PASTE" or
"INSERT" the listing in the appropriate place in the
CATALOG.TXT file.
The output file (catalog.txt) is formatted in the following
fashion:
Name of Catalog
-------------------------------------------------------------
Disk Number xx of catalog [name of catalog]
Volume of disk (as reported by DOS)
(Disk Comment: [if enabled, as keyed by user])
[dir] filename ext size date time
| (Comment: [if enabled, as keyed by user])
|this is the directory on the disk the file is located in.
Revision (version) 1.0A notes:
Version 1 did not have the ability to comment a DISK, this
function has now been added. I found out a day late (and
always a dollar short) that DISK COMMENTING would be a good
idea because of the number of software backup disks people
own. (I am still amazed that I got this tip from a user the
same day I uploaded version 1.00 to a bulletin board.) Now
there is a prompt asking if you would like to have DISK
commenting enabled.
Version 1.0A executable file was compressed using PKLITE 113.
Forgive any wrongs you may find, I tested this compressed
program on a 286 and a 386 cataloging all of: 3.5 inch disks
(both sizes), 5.25 inch disks (both sizes), 2 MFM hard disks,
1 IDE hard disk (3 partitions), and a CDROM; without any
trouble. ** I can't afford to register my copy of PKLITE, so
please, if you use this program, be merciful and send whatever
amount of money you think it deserves. I am also open to any
comments, suggestions, etc regarding the software. **
This program is no longer FREEWARE, please see the
"registration information" below for details.
----------
Why this program was created:
I have tried to use several disk cataloging software packages,
and none of them did things the way I wanted. My main
interests were:
1. Being able to see what subdirectory a file lives in;
2. file sizes and dates for comparison (good if you
suspect a virus);
3. Comments;
-2-
4. The ability to print or edit the listing whenever I
felt like it.
How long and what this program was made in:
Easy Catalog was written in QuickBasic version 4.5 from
Microsoft. It took all of 3 days (nonconsecutive) to write.
The source code is MS-DOS 5.00 Qbasic compatible, so if you
are a budding Basic language programmer and would like the
source, send me a letter and we'll see what we can do.
(Revision 1.0A was a 15 minute addition.)
-----Registration Information-----
This is copyrighted software. I am releasing it as SHAREWARE,
which means that I do not expect prepaid money for it, but
neverfear - if you continue to use this software for more than
a trial or evaluation, registration is not only required but
also moral. It may please you to know this: I get extremely
angry about Shareware authors offering slim program
improvements and a free upgrade for the user sending $xx for
registration. This software is complete, and this is the only
documentation I have for it. I will consider any US currency
as a registration. For that registration you will receive:
the conscious knowledge that you are a good person! I have no
preconceived rules regarding a monetary value on software that
is distributed as Shareware. If you use this program once a
year for archiving your disks, then I would say you get about
$1 use from it per year, wouldn't you? Please, you know the
routine...I've spent many late hours learning programming
languages, and many more hours in developing this particular
program...if you use it, pay for it. (Don't think I won't
cash a 1 cent check either!!)
Anyone sending more than $10 will be entitled to version 2 of
the software mailed to them. The planned enhancements for V2
are: color, multiple catalogs based on the catalog name,
internal print functions, and any user requested enhancements
I can add cheaply before mid-February 1992.
Send registration money to:

Shareware distributors please note: I would appreciate notice
if you distribute this software, but there are no other rules
regarding it than: keep the .EXE and the .DOC together please.
There is no fee to Shareware distributors for use of this
software, registration will be considered paid.

-----Personal Information-----
I am a computer technician/programmer, looking for that good
ole American Opportunity to come my way. If you happen to
have a use for a computer technician/programmer, please
contact me. I have done the bulk of my programming in
Microsoft's QuickBasic, and am now switching to C for game
creation and portable code. I am looking for programmers to
help me get some games done, please write if you are
interested. I have run and would like to run again a free
bulletin board system -- this costs money, and is where
registrations could possibly go.
